Did you know 39% of children live in poverty in the cities of Fillmore and Piru. Or that Fillmore and Piru have the highest high school dropout rate of county schools. Or that Fillmore School District has the highest rate in the county of homeless children. We have the lowest test scores in the county and a large population of English learners. Did you know we have a disproportionately large number of youths in the juvenile justice system. Or that this valley is an agricultural area and much of the community consists of low-income farmworker families. We often see two-three families living in one home.
Did you know the geographic area we serve is the Santa Clara RiverValley. This includes the rural unincorporated parts of the valley as well as the towns of Fillmore, Piru and Santa Paula. Bus passes and/or rides are provided to youth who live beyond walking distance from the One Step Teen Center. This allows them to attend our program after school even if they live some distance from the program.
Did you know that we do intentional outreach to marginalized youth populations including English language learners, youth involved in the juvenile justice system, LGBTQ+ youth, and youth struggling academically or with school attendance. Many are children of immigrants. Many of the youth we work with are coming out of homes with generational violence, poverty or gang involvement. We also reach out to the larger adult community and families of the teens we serve, with our twice monthly food pantry.
Did you know that the One Step Teen Center is open Monday - Friday on school days and through the summer months.
We are here to support youth by increasing teens’ experiences and knowledge in order to be able to face challenges with resilience and to help them recognize their own power to change their community. One way we help accomplish this is to meet with incarcerated youth and youth on probation to help them set goals for future success and provide support and mentoring as they work toward those goals. The Teen Center provides college and career planning support to all teens accessing the program such as tutoring, homework support, incentive programs, and help with college applications and scholarship research. And the Teen Center provides job skills training as well as paid youth jobs within the Teen Center.
Our One Step Teen Center brings access to a space for teens and connections to services for the youth and their families.
